As they begin their five-match Test series against Australia, the Indian cricket team will be trying to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. India’s hopes were severely dashed after they lost to New Zealand 0–3 at home in the series.

But with five games against Australia coming up in the next months, India has a great chance to make it to the WTC Final for the third time in a row. Here are some scenarios in which India can secure a spot in the WTC Final:
India will go to the WTC Final if they win the five-match Test series 4-0 or 5-0, but if they lose even one game, the outcome would depend on the other outcomes.
India will require England to draw at least one Test match against New Zealand or Sri Lanka/Pakistan in order to tie with South Africa if they win 4-1.
In order for India to win 3-2, South Africa must lose two of their four games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, England must defeat New Zealand in one Test, and Sri Lanka must defeat Australia in at least one Test match.
Things become more tricky if the series is tied 2-2. Sri Lanka must lose one Test match against South Africa, while New Zealand must lose one Test match against England. However, Australia must lose both of their matches against Sri Lanka in order for India to go to the WTC Final.
India will go to the WTC Final if they defeat Australia 2-1 in the series and New Zealand loses one match against England and draws one. When it comes to Sri Lanka, it would be ideal for India if they lost both of their matches against South Africa and won both of their matches against Australia.
But if India defeats Australia in the series with just one Test victory, their hopes of making it to the WTC Final will be over.
